PITTSBURG, Kansas - On Friday, Jan. 18 the Concordia Eagles kicked off the indoor track and field season with a meet at the "Rumble in the Jungle Invitational." The meet took place at Pittsburg State University in Kansas and the competition included Division II schools that are nationally ranked including the hosts as well as the Lincoln University of Missouri. CUI showed that it belonged with the competition, placing in the top three of many events and breaking school records in three events: the men's high jump, women's 60 meter hurdles, and the women's 4x400 meter relay.

Michael Ervin and Kessler O'Brien competed for the Eagles men track and field team in the high jump on Friday.  O'Brien jumped a personal best with a height of 1.94 meters, 6'4,'' and placed third amongst the competition. Ervin set a school record in the high jump in his indoor debut as an Eagle and placed second at the meet with a height of 1.99 meters (6'6"). Ervin is also a freshman and has previously made appearances at the state meet where he grew up in Washington.

The first track event was the women's 60 meter hurdle event. Junior Tamia Prince, a business administration major at Concordia, placed second with a time of 8.75 seconds.  That was not only a personal best for Prince but also a school record for the indoor track and field season.

D'Oni Evans, a senior exercise sport science major at Concordia, placed third in the 60 meter race with a time of 7.90 seconds. Second team All-American Sarah Herron placed seventh in the 60 meter with a time of 7.94 seconds. This followed her second place finish in the long jump which totaled 5.72 meters. The 200 meter race followed the 60 meter, with Te'Mesha Paxton, placing fourth for Concordia with a time of 26.04.

Other notable performances came in the longer events, with Wilson Mclean taking second in the 600 yard race with a time of 1:14.  CUI senior Jayson Baker placed sixth in the event with a time of 1:20.  Freshman Miguel Ayala placed third in the 800 meter, with his teammate Hector Arteaga following closely behind with a fourth place finish.  Arteaga also came back strong in the 3,000 meter run later on Friday, placing fifth in that race with a time of 8:55 while Angel Aguirre was right behind him scooting in just under the nine-minute mark.

The highlight of the meet for the CUI Eagles ended with the women's 4x400 meter relay. The quartet of Sarah Herron, Tamia Prince, Fatima Wague, and Madison Hergert set a new school record and placed third. The four runners combined for a total time of 3:55.64, which goes into the CUI indoor track and field record books.

Overall, the Eagles proved they were strong contenders at the Pittsburg State University Division II meet, placing fifth for both the men's and women's teams while only bringing a small margin of their full squad.
