HAYWARD, Calif. - The CUI men's soccer team looked to remain undefeated in PacWest Conference play as the NorCal road trip came to an end. The Eagles won the match 4-3 in an epic battle.
Â
The first half action was nothing short of exciting as four total goals were scored in the first 45 minutes of play. The Hawks of HNU and the Eagles of Concordia put on a show for the crowd.
Â
Junior forward Elijah Amadin picked up from where he left off against Academy of Art earlier in the week. The eagles, on the prowl, found themselves in a one-on-one opportunity for Amadin in a penalty kick that resulted in the first score of the match. Amadin calmly stepped up to the box and placed the ball in the net for the 1-0 Eagle lead.
Â
In the 18th minute of action the Green and Gold leading scorer Caley Powers received a nice ball from teammate Brett Lux, which led to Powers, powering the ball through the back of the net for another Concordia Irvine goal making the score 2-0.
Â
Just moments later the Hawks Josiah Romero got in on the action and scored their first goal of the night off of a penalty kick narrowing the lead 2-1.
Â
Although the temperature was perfect for the match, the heat picked up. Both teams battled hard and fought for the edge. Luke Ryan of the Eagles came up big in the 38th minute with a goal assisted by teammate Nick Aquino.
Â
The half ended with the Concordia in control 3-1.
Â
Second half action underway and the Green and Gold still had a game to finish and a lead to hold. In the 56th minute of action Vicente Flores found the net on a beautiful pass from the CUI goal leader himself, Powers.
Â
Concordia with a 4-1 lead seemingly had the game in hand, but the Hawks had other things in mind. A late second half push saw HNU's Louis Bellido finding the net to cut the deficit 4-2.
Â
In the 73rd minute the Hawks got on the board again with a goal from Fernando Ortiz. Holy Names refused to give up and the Eagles saw the lead shrink once again.
Â
Fortunately for CUI, the defense were able to defend and edge out a victory to complete the Bay Area road trip undefeated in conference play.
Â
"Our goal was to get two wins," said midfielder Aquino. "Instead we got eight goals and two wins."
Â
The Eagles will be back in action at APU on Saturday, Oct. 19th at 3:30 pm. The Cougars are ranked number 2 in the nation and CUI will look to continue their winning streak. Make sure to tune in and support the Concordia squad as they look to give APU the first loss of their season.
