IRVINE, Calif. – Finally back on Eagles Field after a five-game road trip, the CUI women's soccer team continued their conference win streak and defeated Chaminade.Â
The Green and Gold earned another shutout with their impeccable teamwork which started with the offense maintaining control of the ball.  Whenever Chaminade recovered, the CUI midfielders worked to track the ball down and get it back to the offense. Meanwhile, the defensive line performed well as usual minimizing the opponent's shots. This was the fourth shutout on the season for the Eagles. Â
An exciting first half includedÂ
Jadenn Carrillo scoring the first goal about 15 minutes into the game. It was her team-leading seventh goal on the season. Then with less than two minutes left in the first half,
Grace Dalo scored her first goal of the year. SAAC President and senior
Kara Gilchrist earned the assist as she got the ball to Dalo who then popped the ball up and over the defender. The ball bounced once and Dalo got a good run at it before crushing the ball into the bottom of the crossbar before it crossed the plane.
"It felt so good to score and help lead my team to our 3-0 win," said Dalo. "I like to be the game changer, so when I get to come in I try to change the pace of the game."
In the beginning of the second half,Â
Cienah Reed continued her run for the assist record. She now has 18 assists in her career here at CUI and needs only four more to take the record for herself. Reed takes a free kick and places the ball for
Analisa Gjonovich to score, making it 3-0 in favor of the Eagles. Â Â As a unit, the CUI women's soccer team held Chaminade to just one shot the entire game, while CUI had a total of 24 shots.
"It always starts with our defense, but something we've been working on is building up from line to line and we did a really good job of that today," said Dalo. "We came off of a great practice yesterday and wanted to make sure we kept the momentum going. It's all about having confidence in the final third and knowing when the right time is to go and we all did a really good job of that today!"
Danni Barton has been a threat for the opposing offenses all season as she is a primary back line player. Her aggressive and competitive play was a factor again and it helped to keep the ball in CUI's possession.Â
"We worked really hard to keep our line high and made sure that we were high press starting from the forward line," said Barton. "As for the back line, we are very communicative with the midfield and discipline in positioning. We practice building out of the back for execution like in today's game. We played as a unit to keep the tempo up from start to finish and ended with the result we wanted."
Looking forward, the Green and Gold are back at Eagles Field on Thursday, Oct. 31 when they will hope to scare away the Sharks from HPU back to Hawaii. For the rest of the CUI women's soccer schedule, click
