IRVINE, Calif.- The Eagles soared over the Penguins in a speedy getaway out of overtime winning 2-1.
The CUI women's soccer team wasted no time against Dominican.Â
Marianna Maldonado scored her fifth goal of the season just three minutes into the game.Â
Danni Barton, the redshirt sophomore, who is a key piece in their defensive line was awarded with the assist.Â
"I think the past few games our pressure on the other teams has been really good," said Madonado. "It has definitely become one of our strengths so it was just about being consistent with that throughout the game. And scoring early on helped us open the game up and let us figure out how we could fun solutions to the game."Â
With the lead very early on in the game it added more pressure to the defensive line to ensure Dominican would not score. The entire first half the Eagles were able to defend their goal.
"We knew that Dominican had nothing to lose & that they would come out pressuring high," said Barton. "Despite last week's rough outcome, we turned the page & were ready to come out and compete. Defensively, we had to utilize our outside backs & eventually were able to break through."
The very beginning of the second half Dominican was able to gain a spark and scored four minutes into the half, tying the game 1-1. The Eagles now searching for more options to score and trying to tighten up the defense. The remainder of the half was scoreless for both teams.Â
Heading into overtime the Eagles were looking to finish the game off. In a matter of 25 seconds
Jadenn Carrillo was able to score her 11
th goal and her sixth game winning goal. The kick-off happened for the start of overtime and
Kara Gilchrist was able to win the ball out of the air and get it to
Brooke Zavosky. Zavsoky then played the ball to Carrillo who was able to play it past the keeper. Overtime was very short lived and the women's soccer team was able to leave with the win.
Looking forward the Eagles play their last regular season game against Norte Dame De Namur on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 11:00 a.m. The Eagles are currently ranked eighth in the NCAA West Regional Rankings and are looking to make a final push towards the playoffs. Only the top seven teams move forward. For the full Eagles schedule click
