Vulcans Snap Eagles Three Game Win Streak

IRVINE, Calif. - The Concordia women's volleyball team were looking to continue their three game winning streak tonight against Hawaii Hilo but the Vulcans snapped their run in four sets. CUI is now 10-9 in the PacWest Conference with three games remaining in conference play.

Sophomore Patience O'Neal led the offense with 11 kills, while Riley Gill was right behind with another double-double ten kills and 12 digs. Both middles had a dominating performance both offensively and defensively with Hannah Tostado collecting another five blocks and three digs and having five kills with a hitting percentage of .364, while the three-time PacWest Freshman of the Week Mackenzie Jensen had seven kills with four blocks Senior Julia DenBoer collected 15 digs, while Jaclyn Brown added eight kills and 11 digs.

The first set was a battle between both teams as the score was tied four times and had three lead changes. Just as the Eagles took a 20-17 lead, the Vulcans broke away on a run and took a 20-22 lead. CUI was unable to come back as UHH took the first set by a close 21-25 score.

The second set was another story as the Eagles took a dominating 22-9 lead with Brianna Latigue and Brown went on a run at the service line along with a few hitting errors from the Hawaii Hilo that extended their lead. The Vulcans were unable to answer offensively and the Eagles took set two by a dominating 25-9. CUI held UHH to a -.091 hitting percentage while the green and gold topped at .375 with 11 kills and only two errors.

Hawaii Hilo answered back in the last two sets as they stopped Concordia offensively and won both 21-25 and 14-25. The fourth set started out going back and forth until UHH went on a nine point run where they were able to hold CUI with their strong defense as CUI did not hit above .200 and had some unforced errors in the remaining sets.

NEXT UP: CUI will be back in action next week on Wednesday, November 20 at 6 p.m. as they take on Azusa Pacific for their last conference road game for the 2019 season. The Eagles will play two more home games that weekend against Notre Dame de Namur on Friday at 7 p.m. and Dominican on Saturday at 3 p.m. where the seniors will be recognized.
