CUI Posts Third Straight Shutout On Senior Day

IRVINE, Calif. – In the annual "Senior Day" for the Eagles, the Green and Gold took on the Sea Lions of Point Loma Nazarene University and earned a 1-0 victory.
CUI came out firing early and often throughout the half as they took six shots at the net. Attackers Elijah Amadin, Vicente Flores and Caley Powers each had two looks at the goal.
This match would have major implications on the top of PacWest Conference standings. With second place in the league up for grabs and a previous history of intense battles, the two programs came out physical and ready to battle.
The second half action consisted more of the same play from both squads. With the game on the line, it was an all-out war between PLNU and the Green and Gold.
Keeper Mac Hutchins earned his third straight shutout behind the defense of Alfonso Quezada, Michael Oakson and Brett Lux. Hutchins collected five saves on 10 attempts at the net, while the other five attempts were team saves or off target.
"Today was huge for the team," said Hutchins. "With Point Loma a game ahead of us, we knew we had to come locked in with the goal of winning for the seniors and we achieved that."
In the 76th minute of action, Willy Ospina found an opportunity off of a ricocheted ball and powered the ball through the back of the net for the game-winning goal of the match. It wound up being the only goal between the two teams.
From then on, the Sea Lions had an uphill battle and could not find the net, leaving the Eagles victorious for the fourth straight match.
"As a coach, it was amazing to see the team come together against the tough Point Loma team," said graduate assistant Ari Claro. "Every player that stepped onto the field, played their part and it allowed us to be successful and find the net. As an alum that had my senior day a year ago, it feels good to see the program develop with some of the guys that I have played with since their freshman year. It is a testament to not only the program, but also the players and their hard work."
"I am really proud of our performance today," said head coach Chris Gould. "Our guys worked really hard for each other and gave the seniors a special day to remember topped off with a special goal."
The Eagles made all proud with their Senior Day victory and will look to keep the ball rolling in NorCal against Dominican University on Thursday, Nov. 14 at 1:30 p.m.
