Eagles Top Hawks As Green Brothers Reunite

Green Brothers Face Off In First-Ever Meeting

IRVINE, Calif. – Make it five straight wins for the Concordia University Irvine men's basketball team.

And make it a first for Concordia's Andre Green and his younger brother, Aidan, who plays for Holy Names University.

With family and friends watching in the stands, the brothers faced off for the first time at the NCAA DII level with both wearing No. 4 for their perspective teams. Andre tallied 13 points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds for the Eagles against his former school while Aidan also started and collected nine points and eight rebounds for the Hawks. Andre's team ultimately prevailed 84-76 in a gritty, back-and-forth battle by both squads.

"It was weird but it was definitely a fun experience," said Green after facing off against his sibling. "It's like something you talk about when you are younger and it was definitely just a cool experience."

Andre joined the Eagles this off-season after earning his undergraduate degree at Holy Names and playing four seasons for the Hawks.

"Many of these guys are my friends (on the other side) and I played with them for the last two, three, four years so it was a good time."

It was a special memory for the Green family, but also a game where the entire Eagles squad was pretty satisfied with the effort and outcome. Jalen Sanders and Robert
McCoy paced the CUI offense with 16 points apiece, while Jamel White and Darius Lee each added 10. The Eagles shot 53.7 percent from the field, but only made two treys the entire contest courtesy Green and Mike Mellinger.

The Hawks sank 35 percent of their three-pointers (7-for-20) to stay within striking distance. However, the Eagles were able to garner 12 steals and scored 29 points off turnovers to fend off the visitors.

"It was a hard-fought win and they aren't easy to come by in this league so we're happy to get any that we can," said CUI men's basketball coach Ken Ammann. "We have a great team, a deep team, and a close team and we compete very well together."

CUI improved to 9-3 overall with the victory and is the only PacWest team to still be unbeaten in conference play.

"When you start the season, the goal is to win the conference and we've started off great in that regard," added Green. "3-0 is a pretty good place to be sitting going into Christmas break."

The Eagles next four games are on the road, starting with a trip to the Bay Area to face Notre Dame de Namur on Thursday, Jan. 2. CUI's next home contest is a "Code Yellow" doubleheader sponsored by The Habit Burger Grill on Thursday, Jan. 16 against Biola University. Both the CUI men's and women's basketball teams have started the conference slate a perfect 3-0 heading into 2020, as the CUI women also defeated HNU on Saturday.
