IRVINE, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine women's basketball team pulled away early from Hawai'i Hilo in its PacWest Conference opener and ultimately cruised to a 72-42 victory on Saturday night.
Four different Eagles scored in double figures with
Jasmine Rachal leading all players with 18 points.
Katie Timmerman came out on fire and knocked down her first three attempts from downtown to help the Eagles open up an early 13-2 lead before the first timeout.
Lainie James added a driving layup off a UHH turnover to push the advantage to 18 late in the first quarter as CUI closed the opening period up 23-7.
CUI led comfortably by a 43-17 margin at the break. The Eagles shot the lights out from three-point land, going 7-for-12 in the first half and finishing 10-for-24 on the night at a 41.7 percent clip.
Timmerman finished a perfect 6-for-6 from the floor and 5-for-5 on threes for a total of 17 points.
"The game is about getting stops and making shots and we did that tonight," added CUI head coach
Christine Collins-Kiernan. "Katie
made 46,000 shots this summer, she trusted her preparation and she executed."
"We played looser tonight," admitted Timmerman. "Once I made one, then Sierra (Clark) made one and Jazz made one and it opened up the inside for everyone else since we were all hitting outside shots. It was really nice to hit all of our options."
The Torrance, Calif. native was the catalyst in the first half. The CUI sophomore connected on all five of her field goals from the floor in the first 20 minutes, including a no-look, overhead flip shot that delighted the crowd right before the halftime buzzer.

"I just think it was very telling of how we were hitting our shots and everything was going right for us left and right," said Timmerman, when asked how her circus shot fittingly found the bottom of the net. "We had a few hiccups defensively, but offensively, everyone was on and we were all just hitting."
Starting point guard
Sierra Clark was one of five CUI freshman to earn playing time against the Vulcans and poured in a career-high 16 points. Clark also knocked down a season-best four treys.
Junior
Michaela VanderKlugt added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
"We played a truly complete game from tip to buzzer from player one to 16," added Collins-Kiernan. "We understood our game plan, stayed engaged and everyone who touched the floor contributed."
The Eagles now turn their attention to a road matchup against Cal State San Marcos on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. The Cougars were ranked No. 2 in this past week's D2 West Regional rankings.
