Eagles Sink Sharks For Fourth Straight Win

IRVINE, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine men's basketball team earned its fourth straight win and improved to 9-0 at home against PacWest Conference opponents with an emphatic 92-67 victory Monday evening over Hawai'i Pacific.

PacWest Defender of the Week Brian Chambers scored 21 points while Cameron English chipped in with 15 off the bench.  It was a balanced attack by the Eagles as juniors Kyle Gray and Jamel White each added 11 points and teammates Robert Taylor and Austin Clarke each joined the fun with eight points apiece.

CUI collected 14 steals and forced the Sharks to commit 25 turnovers which led to 33 points for the Green and Gold.

"Our guards did a really good job of putting pressure on their guards and we wanted to stay on them the whole time and not give them anything easy," said redshirt freshman Kayle Knuckles, who added seven points.

The home crowd was treated to a dazzling passing display in the second half as the Eagles moved the ball around the horn on multiple occasions, electing to take higher percentage shots often around the rim.   Chambers led CUI with eight helpers just two days after setting the school record for assists this past Saturday with 17 dimes against Hawai'i Hilo.

The Eagles finished the night shooting 56 percent from the field and also made 10-of-26 attempts from three-point land (39 percent).

"We played very unselfishly," said head coach Ken Ammann.  "I was very impressed with our team and how selfless we are and how focused on winning we are. And it starts with our seniors: Brian (Chambers), Geoff (Gerlach) and Tyler (Lacour).

The Eagles built a 50-26 lead by halftime and cruised the rest of the way.  Ten different players scored for CUI including reserve guard Shane Walker, who hit a trey in the final minute for his first points of the season.

"We're playing really well right now and we know we have a chance at something special this year," added Knuckles. "We just want to keep it going and give it our all every game."

Concordia improved to 20-8 on the season and 16-3 against PacWest teams. HPU fell to 7-17 overall and 4-15 in conference play.

"I feel like our team has been extremely prepared and as well as I can ever remember," said Ammann. "100 percent of that credit goes to our assistant coaches who have done an incredible job communicating clearly to our players what needs to be done each night and that's translated really well to the court."

The victory also meant head coach Ken Ammann has led Concordia to at least 20 wins in 15 of his 18 seasons at the helm.

Next up for the Eagles is a home date with Fresno Pacific.  The Sunbirds visit CU Arena this Thursday, Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m. as the second part of that night's doubleheader.  The women's teams will face off at 5:30 p.m. in game one that evening.
