Eagles win Seventh Consecutive Game

The Eagles put their six game winning streak on the line on Wednesday afternoon and pitcher Callie Nunes put a couple of impressive streaks on the line, as well.  After two straight no hitters, Nunes didn't get a third on Wednesday, but she was dominant once again.  She entered the game with a 14.1 inning scoreless streak and was able to keep that alive.

Facing the Adelphi University Panthers, the Eagles were looking for a sweep.  After both offenses started slow, the Eagles finally broke through in the third and grabbed the lead.  Freshman Megan Massa led off the inning with a double to left center and then stole third, and Amanda Gjertsen continued her torrid hitting tear, roping a double to the right center field gap.  Massa came home to score and put the Eagles on top 1-0.

Though Nunes' hitless inning streak ended in the top of the third on a bunt single by Adelphi's Lauren O'Neill, Nunes continued to send hitters back to the dugout, flummoxing them with her velocity, movement, location, and overall dominance on the mound.  While a one run lead is often all that Nunes needs to secure a win, she got more help on Wednesday.  In the fourth inning, Sarah Kretschmar led off the inning with a double, McKinsey Thorpe then singled up the middle, and Michelle Lieng brought home a run on a pinch hit to right field.  Massa then brought in Thorpe on a sacrifice fly, and at the end of four, the Eagles led 3-0.

"Every time we score a run, it's for whoever is on the mound," said junior third baseman Amanda Gjertsen. "It's a main goal for our whole team.  Just do it for the pitchers."

With the Eagles holding a five run lead, Nunes' day came to a close.  In the sixth inning, Jordan Quinn took over in the circle, and though the Panthers were able to add three unearned runs in the sixth, it wasn't enough.  The Eagles added a run on error in the bottom of the sixth, and then Quinn closed out the game in the seventh.  The Eagles won 6-3.

With the win, the Eagles are now winners in seven straight games.  Over the previous five games, the CUI team ERA is a miniscule 0.21.

As the Eagles begin conference action this week, they will look to continue their fine play against PacWest opponents.

"Our pitching and defense have been great and we have found a way to score runs to get some wins," said head coach Crystal Rosenthal.  "Moving forward, we need to keep improving in all areas to be the best we can be."

Eagle Eye: Nunes pitched five shutout innings, extending her scoreless innings streak to 19.1.  Sarah Kretschmar collected a season high three hits.

What's Next:  CUI begins PacWest Conference play with a doubleheader on Friday, taking on the Biola Eagles at home.  Game one begins at 1:00 p.m.
