IRVINE, Calif. — Coming off its first pair of PacWest wins, Eagles baseball (9-10, 4-0 PWC) continued to host Hawai'i Pacific (16-10, 3-7 PWC) in a doubleheader on Monday. Concordia took game one 8-3 and totaled 10 hits. Game two ended in a walk-off walk from Tony Garcia III and the Eagles took the series four games to none.
Game One: Concordia 8, Hawai'i Pacific 3
Alex Zalasky earned his first PacWest win of the season. The junior left hander threw for eight innings and allowed eight hits and two earned runs. From the pen, Jack Ruegge entered the game in the ninth for the final three outs.
Carl Turner made his entrance into the game in the fifth and went 2-for-2 with four RBIs. Nick Grimes went 2-for-5 with two singles and a run.
CUI scored two in the third inning. First, an RBI double down the right field line by Tony Garcia III scored both Jair Donovan and Nick Grimes. Cooper Moore smacked a single to right field to score Garcia from second and give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.
Haloa Dudoit popped up to center field in the fourth for a sacrifice fly that brought Bailey Collins home.
The final four runs for Concordia were produced by Carl Turner. The junior entered the game to pinch hit and later took over in left field. With bases loaded in his first at bat, Turner hit a drive to left field and cleared the bases of Moore and Matt Lautz. CUI lead 6-1 after five innings.
In his second at bat in the seventh, Turner doubled to left center field to once again score Moore and Lautz.
A pair of HPU runs in the eighth inning put the final score at 8-3 for game one of the Monday doubleheader.
"I was honestly just trying to get the next guy up and be a team player," Turner said. "When I came off the bench to pinch hit in my first at bat, I just focused on getting the next guy up and that took the pressure off me and made my job a little easier."
Game Two: Concordia 9, Hawai'i Pacific 8
At the start of game two, the Sharks added a run to the board from an RBI single to right center field.
Lautz answered in the bottom of the first with an RBI single to score Dudoit and tie it up. Dudoit scored again in the third from a sacrifice fly to center field by Donovan.
Turner continued his momentum in the box through to game two. In the fourth, he singled to left center to score Dudoit and was hit home on a double down the right field line by Collin Villegas. Next, Shane Hersh doubled down the right field line to score Villegas and give the Eagles a 5-3 lead.
HPU scored two in the top of five. Grimes made a backhanded dig at third base to toss to Hersh at second and get the lead runner to cut the inning for the Eagles.
Concordia matched the Sharks in the bottom of the fifth. Moore cranked a double down the right field line to start the two-run rally. Bailey Collins singled to right to score Moore and was closely followed with a single by Turner to bring Collins home. The Sharks pulled ahead briefly in the top of the seventh to make it a one run game at 8-7.
With two hit-by-pitch's and a single by Collins, the bases were loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning. Calvin Shonebaum pinch hit and walked the tying run across the plate.
