SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Concordia Baseball and No. 14 Point Loma split a PacWest doubleheader on Friday, Mar. 22 in San Diego, Calif. PLNU won the opener 6-2, and Concordia took the nightcap, 10-9.
Game One: Point Loma 6, Concordia 2
Eagles attacked one at a time, with solo runs in the second and fifth innings. First, Matt Lautz doubled down the left field line and was scored on a sacrifice fly by Cooper Moore.
Back-to-back singles by Tony Garcia III and Moore with no outs in the fifth put Concordia in a great spot. Bailey Collins sacrifice bunted to move the runners and Garcia was scored on a groundout to second base, hit by Chris Martin II.
Brett Vansant pitched 6.1 innings, allowed six hits and struck out two Sea Lions.
- Lautz went 2-for-4, two doubles
- Moore went 1-for-1 with two walks
- Garcia went 2-for-4
Game Two: Concordia 10, Point Loma 9
A trio of runs in the second inning put the energy back in the Eagles offensive lineup. Lautz started the rally with a bunt for a base hit and advanced to second when Moore walked in the next at bat. Collins crushed a single through the third baseman to score Lautz and bring Moore to second base. Freshman Colin Villegas moved the runners up a base with a single to left center. Next, Moore scored on a double-play and Collins scored on a single through the left side by Dominic Castro.
Lautz continued to make plays for the Eagles in the third, started by a single to center field. The junior stole second base and scored on an error by the first baseman after Moore singled to the shortstop.
In the fourth, Chris Martin II singled to score Villegas and advanced to second on the throw. Grimes doubled to score Martin and give CUI a 6-1 lead.
Concordia added solo run's in the fifth, seventh, eighth and the go-ahead in the tenth. Martin knocked a sacrifice fly to score one in the fifth, after Collins doubled down the right field line to put himself in scoring position.
In the top of the seventh, Point Loma scored eight runs and took the lead 9-8.
Eagles fought back in the bottom. Moore doubled down the left field line and was scored on a single to right field by Martin. Three consecutive singles in the eighth by Grimes, Donovan, and Lautz scored another and tied the game at 9-9.
Grimes walked in the tenth and Donovan smacked a single to right field to score Grimes and give Concordia the 10-9 lead and the win in the nightcap.
Morgan Brannock earned the win from the mound in game two. In relief, the senior threw two innings, struck out two, and allowed two hits.
