IRVINE, Calif. – The Concordia men's volleyball team looked to do one thing that no other team has ever done this season, earn a win against top ranked Hawaii.
However, that was not the outcome as the Rainbow Warriors earned the sweep over the Eagles, 25-20, 25-16, 25-16.
Jordan Hoppe led the way for the Eagles, putting down 11 kills and two aces. Splitting time on each side of the pins was
Raymond Barsemian who had nine kills and setting the two attackers was
Chandler Gibb with 25 assists and a team-high six digs.
The first set was competitive, going back and forward between each team. Freshman
Luke Krzmarzick put up a dig off an outside attack from UH and Gibb rewarded him with a swing that he put away off a backrow defender to put CUI within two at 13-11. Contribution from multiple players kept Concordia close but the Warriors ended the set with its balanced offensive weapons.
Many Hawaii errors gave Concordia opportunities to stay in the set as the score was tied early at 8-8.
Zachary Meyer checked in and put a spark of energy into his team, putting down two kills to put them within three midset. Krzmarzick and Howell each tooled the Warriors block to give the Eagles life, but Hawaii used a 4-0 run to close out set two.
A quick 4-0 lead from UH forced an early CUI timeout. However, the Eagles fought their way back due to the heavy arm of Hoppe to come within one at 10-9. Scrappy defense from the Warriors allowed many offensive opportunities to score heavily in the set. Hoppe and Howell knocked down points but a block solo from the nation's leader in blocks ended the night.
The Rainbow Warriors are on a NCAA record setting 63 set winning streak, to go along with the programs best start at 21-0. Concordia is 12-16 overall and will finish the week with its final two home matches against No. 10 BYU on Friday and No. 6 Stanford on Saturday.
