Riding a six game winning streak, the Concordia softball team took on two more teams on Saturday, including the No. 11 ranked UC San Diego Tritons. The field at the Tournament of Champions is loaded with talented teams, and the two biggest draws squared off in the early afternoon. When the Eagles met UC San Diego in game one of the day, the matchup represented a possible preview of postseason action. The Eagles struggled, however, falling to the Tritons, 4-1. After a short break, they returned to the field and took on Stanislaus State in game two, losing again, this time by a 4-0 score.
CUI vs. UC San Diego
The Eagles were unable to crack the code of left handed starting pitcher Robyn Wampler on Saturday. Entering the game, Wampler, like CUI starter
Callie Nunes, boasted an impressive resume. After winning 25 games in 2018, she's been even better in 2019, with an impressive 1.44 ERA.
The Eagles were only able to collect six hits and one run off the lefty, while the Tritons did enough to come away with a win. Nunes went five innings, giving up three runs, one of which was unearned.
Sarah Kretschmar collected two hit for the Eagles and drove in the lone run with an RBI hit in the seventh.
The Tritons were too sharp on this day, however. They scored one run in the third, two in the fifth, and one in the seventh. UCSD won 4-1 and snapped the Eagles' six game winning streak.
CUI vs. Stanislaus State
While the opening game of the day for the Eagles came against one of the top teams in the country, the second game came against a team with just a 15-21 record. Despite the apparent talent advantage for the Eagles, the Warriors played incredibly well, shocking the Eagles, and beating them, 4-0.
The Eagles collected seven hits, but were unable to get any runs. The Warriors, on the other hand, got a run in the third and three in the fifth.
Amanda Gjertsen made her season debut as a pitcher, throwing two shutout innings. It was too late, however, and the Eagles concluded their day with a frustrating loss.
After a busy week, the Eagles have a break in their schedule. Their next game is not until April 12, when they take on Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont.
