IRVINE, Calif. - Concordia University Irvine forward
Kayle Knuckles contributed 17 points and a team-high four three-pointers on Saturday in CUI's regular season finale down at Point Loma.
For his efforts against the Sea Lions, the redshirt freshman from Highlands Ranch, Colo. was named PacWest Conference Freshman of the Week.
Incredibly, this is the fourth time that Knuckles has claimed this honor by the conference. No other player in the league has done so this season.
Knuckles and his CUI teammates earned the No. 2 seed in the PacWest Conference Tournament and a first round bye after going 22-9 overall and 18-4 in PacWest play. Knuckles helped the Eagles go 12-1 at home and an impressive 11-0 at CU Arena against conference opponents. It was also the 15th time in 18 seasons that CUI head coach
Ken Ammann has led the Eagles to at least 20 victories.
CUI will play this Friday, March 8 at 12:30 p.m. up in San Rafael, Calif. against the winner of Thursday's Holy Names-Chaminade contest. The tournament is being hosted by Dominican University this year. The Eagles split both contests against both the Hawks and the Silverswords this year, with the home team winning each time.
The CUI women's basketball team also made the PacWest Conference Tournament and earned the No. 6 seed in the women's bracket. Coach
Christine Collins-Kiernan's squad will face No. 3 seed Hawai'i Pacific this Thursday, March 7 at 5 p.m. in the quarterfinals. If the CUI women are able to advance, they will face the host Penguins on Friday, March 8 at 5 p.m.
