No. 3 Eagles Extend Winning Streak to 13 After Sweep of CSUEB

FREMONT, Calif. - 11 days off did nothing to slow down the red hot Concordia softball team.  After finally taking the field again on Wednesday, the Eagles picked up right where they left off, with dominant pitching and top-to-bottom hitting carrying the Eagles to two more wins.

Despite not playing since February 23, the Eagles continued their climb up the Division II Coaches Poll.  Tuesday morning, the Eagles were named the No. 3 team in the nation according to the poll, and in the afternoon, the Eagles proved their worth.

Game one:  In the top of the first inning, the Eagles' offense went right to work.  After a hit and a walk, Michelle Lieng doubled to left center to bring in the first run of the game.  Two batters later, McKinsey Thorpe drew a bases loaded walk, Lieng then scored on a wild pitch, and Heather Nonora brought home another runner with an infield hit.  At the end of one, the Eagles led 4-0.

Cal State East Bay countered the Eagles' big first inning with a pair of unearned runs in the first inning off of Concordia ace Callie Nunes, who was recently recognized at the national level as the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Pitcher of the Week.

In the second, the Eagles added two more to extend their lead back to four.  Danielle Michaels led off the inning with a triple to right field, Sprinkle added an RBI hit of her own, and when the inning came to a close, the Eagles found themselves on top 6-2.

Nunes settled in, easily holding the lead.  She gave up just one earned run over five innings and earned her ninth win of the season.

Meanwhile, the Eagles' offense continued to pile on runs.  Three straight hits in the fifth brought in a run, and sloppy defense by the Pioneers led to two more for the Eagles in the sixth.

Erika Morris came out of the bullpen to finish off the game for the Eagles in the circle.  She threw two shutout innings and the Eagles won game one, 9-3.

Eagle Eye: Sydney Sprinkle finished two-for-three with two walks, two runs scored, and an RBI.  Heather Nonora finished three-for-three at the plate with an RBI.

Game two:  In the second game, the offensive barrage continued.  After a quiet first two innings, the Eagles broke loose in the third and never looked back.  Lauren Lopez began the rally with a one out single, Megan Massa added a single, Amanda Gjertsen went to the opposite field for a double, and Sydney Sprinkle capped the rally with a three run home run.  The Eagles scored four in the inning and were just getting started.

In the fourth, the Eagles added three more, and in the sixth, Gjertsen kept the party alive with a two run home run.  Finally in the seventh, the Eagles scored three more runs on three hits and two walks.  When the game came to a close, the Eagles had 12 runs on 11 hits.  They drew nine walks, as well, and cruised to another win.

Jordan Quinn and Erika Morris continued their solid pitching, giving up five runs, only two of which were earned.  The Eagles won 12-5 and extended their winning streak to 13 games.

Eagle Eye: Amanda Gjertsen finished two-for-three with two runs scored, two walks, and four RBI's.  Sarah Kretschmar went three-for-four at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI.

On Deck:: The Eagles continue their road trip this week and will open up their next series with a doubleheader against the Dominican Penguins on Friday.  Game one begins at 12:00 p.m. weather-permitting in San Rafael, California.
