CUI Men’s Tennis Stuns No. 43 Sonoma State In PacWest Tourney

Note: This story was updated after the conclusion of the PacWest Championships.

SURPRISE, Ariz. – After dropping the doubles point and falling behind 2-0 in the early going on Thursday, the Concordia University Irvine men's tennis team rallied to defeat No. 43 Sonoma State in the quarterfinals of the PacWest Championships.

CUI clinched a 4-2 victory when freshman Teis Visser earned a hard-fought 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win in No. 4 singles over Sonoma State's Igor Pissarenko.

Thomas Kyle won in straight sets at No. 5 singles for the Eagles' first point.  Fellow seniors Daniel Reddmann and Nikita Katsnelson triumphed over their counterparts to put the Eagles ahead 3-2.  Reddman topped Max Nudell, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, before Katsnelson defeated Santiago Sarudiansky 6-4, 7-5.

"The three seniors (Nikita, Thomas and Daniel) really showed their maturity today leading the team with the first three singles wins for us," said CUI head coach Jonathan Sanchez, "and gave Teis the confidence to keep fighting after being down a set to eventually come back and win the deciding match."

"The energy was great," added Sanchez. "Teis looked very composed, especially for a freshman in such a big moment. He continues to play better and more confident every match. I am very proud of the way he played today."

CUI freshman Yassine Smiej, who was named Second Team All-Conference on Wednesday, was also in a battle with No. 1 singles opponent Nate Oppenheim when the Eagles clinched.  Smiej won the second set 7-6 (7-5) after his opponent took the opening set by a score of 6-4.  Their match was officially ruled unfinished since the outcome was already decided when Visser won his match up.

"I think the team realized they needed to settle down a little bit and refocus," said Sanchez. "They did a phenomenal job battling back after doubles."

Concordia advanced to the semifinals but ultimately fell to top-seeded Hawaii Pacific on Friday, 4-0.  In the third place match, the Eagles bowed out to Azusa Pacific and finished in fourth place at the Conference Championships.
