LA MIRADA, Calif. - The Concordia women's volleyball team (9-4, 3-2 PacWest) wrapped up their four consecutive road games against first place Biola University (6-6, 3-1 PacWest) on Saturday night. Concordia was able to sweep Biola in three straight sets, making this the first win for the Green and Gold over Biola since 2014.
The Eagles offense and defense stepped up as four CUI Eagles;
Riley Gill,
Jaclyn Brown,
Patience O'Neal, and
Mackenzie Jensen all led the team with 11 kills each and totaled 11 blocks on the night. Jensen went 11-for-13, with an impressive .846 hitting percentage. Running a 5-1 offense,
Brianna Latigue had a solid night leading the front row, dishing out a career-high 38 assists with 10 digs for the Concordia. Freshman defensive specialist,
Cassidy Gelacio tallied two aces and two digs while senior libero,
Julia DenBoer led the team with 11 digs.
"We served extremely well, offense was clicking, and our blocking was good. It was a great team win," said Coach
Paula Weishoff.
The first set between the Eagles was the most competitve as they both battled back and forth for the lead. Just as Concordia would take the lead, Biola was right behind bringing the score within just a couple of points. Gill and Brown went on a couple of service runs to push away from BU that would ultimately help to take the first set 25-22.
Right out of the gates with the second set, Gill was at the service line with kills from
Hannah Tostado and O'Neal, taking a 6-2 lead. Biola continued to challenge Concordia by earning a couple aces, but Jensen was able to stop their drive with a hard hit kill. Concordia was able to hold Biola from going on long runs, only allowing one four point run on the night during the second set. Libero, DenBoer finished the second set with a final score 25-20 and an ace.
CUI continued their momentum in the third set, going on multiple runs that would push the lead further in their favor. Concordia took a commanding 20-12 lead, not allowing Biola to come back in the game, with three kills from Gill finishing the match and set at 25-14.
NEXT: The Eagles are back on their home court against Azusa Pacific on Wednesday, October 2 at 7 p.m. Concordia will be on the road again the following week, playing three games in just four days in Hawai'i.
