Weishoff Earns Career Win No. 300

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - After a hard-fought battle with Seattle Pacific on Friday night, the Concordia women's volleyball team had a repeat performance the following morning and it was a special one. In a five-set thriller with San Francisco State, the 3-2 victory marked win No. 300 for head coach Paula Weishoff in her coaching career.

"I had no idea, Ben (Rosehart) surprised me," said Weishoff. "It was funny, Jac (Brown) gave me a big hug after the match and said 'congratulations on win 300,' I was like what? It was a special moment when the team cheered 'Happy 300' and of course taking a picture with them as they were the reason we won."

Concordia 3, San Francisco State 2
In the morning, Concordia took on San Francisco State, who also started out their season 1-1. The first two sets went in favor of the Gators as they would go on runs to defeat the Eagles 25-15 and 25-14.

As San Francisco State cruised to a 2-0 set lead, opposite hitter Kylie Breitenwischer delivered two kills to keep Concordia in the third set at 12 all. Multiple errors from SFSU awarded CUI a 4-0 run to get ahead 23-18. The Gators stormed back within one but a kill from Jaclyn Brown followed by an ace by Hannah Tostado sealed the set.

Looking to hold onto the momentum, the Eagles struck first and held tight with the Falcons. Concordia would then sparked an 11-2 run on serving runs from Clarice Buchanan and Brianna Latigue to go up 20-12. There was no looking back as three straight SFSU hitting errors ended the set 25-16 and forced a pivotal fifth set.

The Green and Gold struck early to go up 6-4. Buchanan delivered again from the service line, staying consistent to allow her team to go on a 6-0 run to double up on the Gators at 12-6. A kill by Riley Gill gave the Eagles set point followed by another to end the set. Concordia hit .450 in set five with nine kills and no hitting errors, for its best hitting numbers coming at the right time.

Concordia 3, Cal State East Bay 0
Rounding out the Sea Lion Invitational, Concordia faced Cal State East Bay and came away with its first sweep of the season. Trailing 11-13, the Eagles put together an 8-1 run courtesy of three points each from Breitenwischer and Brown plus a Tostado ace. A kill from Jordan Mineer gave CUI set point and an ace from Julia DenBoer locked down a 1-0 match lead.

Set two was a battle as the set featured 12 ties and no team went up more than three. Down 20-22, Concordia scored four straight off CSUEB errors and Brown put down one of her team-high 13 kills to finish the set at 25-23. The Eagles got off to a hot start using an 8-1 run to lead 17-8. A trio of Mineer kills helped Concordia sideout to then allow Gill to secure the 3-0 victory for CUI.

Round Up: Concordia ends the tournament with a 3-1 record, with victories over teams all from the west region. Three different players led the Eagles in points in the four matches, while a majority of the roster made appearances on the court.

"We were talking about that today with the coaches," said Weishoff. "We have depth at each position. Plus our bench is literally so energetic and excited every point!"

Next Up: Staying down south, Concordia will take part of the DII West Region Showcase in La Jolla, Calif., hosted by UC San Diego. The Eagles will face Montana State Billings and host UC San Diego on Sep. 13, and round out the tournament against Saint Martin's and Chico State the following day. The home opener follows right behind as CUI hosts Point Loma on Wednesday, Sept. 18.
