IRVINE, Calif. - Make it six straight home wins for the Concordia University Irvine men's basketball team.
CUI emerged with a 69-61 victory over Biola on Code Yellow night sponsored by The Habit Burger Grill. The Green and Gold pounced on the visitors from the opening tip, scoring the first nine points of the game and opening up a 16-4 advantage on a steal and breakaway dunk by
Rob McCoy. A few dribbles later,
Cameron English sank a jumper while getting fouled and converted the three-point play to put CUI ahead 19-4.
CUI (13-4, 7-1 PacWest) never trailed in the contest and the lead ballooned to as much as 19 midway through the first half. The Eagles have now won nine of their last 10 games.
"We really just focused on getting the best start that we could," said English. "After the loss to APU, we wanted to bounce back and get that win over Fresno Pacific on the road. That was a tough, fast trip and especially to get this win - Biola is a really good team in the conference and it's anyone's game at this point."
As is customary for head coach
Ken Ammann's teams, CUI's defense was superb. The Green and Gold were so locked in, they limited Biola's shooters to a startling 1-for-17 from three-point land. The Eagles got treys from
Austin Clarke,
Jalen Sanders and
Kayle Knuckles, but also concentrated their shots inside the arc.
Overall, CUI shot 40 percent from the field while Biola (10-6, 6-4 PacWest) ended the night shooting at just a 33 percent clip. Biola won the rebounding battle 50-35 and had 17 offensive rebounds, but struggled to get into a shooting rhythm.
McCoy came up with a couple thundering slams by stepping into the passing lanes and coming up with multiple steals.
Jamel White fed him for a nasty one-handed hole punch in the second half which sent the entire CUI bench and the raucous home crowd into a frenzy.
"We had great energy coming back from break and this being the first home game, I think it definitely played a part in helping us get out to a good start."
Sanders and McCoy each finished the evening with 13 points to pace CUI. English totaled 12 points and 6 rebounds while guard
Andre Green chipped in with 10. Knuckles added seven points and a team-high seven boards and earned a game-best +11 while on the floor.
The next test for Concordia comes Saturday, Jan. 18 down in Point Loma. The Eagles and Sea Lions are on a collision course once again as both squads are currently holding down the top two spots in the PacWest Conference standings. Tipoff is slated for 4 p.m. following the women's contest which starts at 2 p.m.
