Eagles Celebrate Walk-Off Against The Warriors

IRVINE, Calif. - The Concordia baseball team had its first matchup against Westcliff University in school history on Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles were able to snap the Warriors 10-game winning streak with an exciting walk-off 6-5 win.

Noah McBride headed to the hill for the start and pitched three innings for the Green and Gold.  Tony Garcia III started things off for the Eagles in the top of the second by reaching on an error and bringing Ryan Johnston home to help the Eagles take a 1-0 lead. Westcliff answered back in the next inning with four hits and four runs to take the lead over Concordia for most of the game.

However, the next three pitchers for the Eagles only allowed five hits and one run in six innings. Chase Lyford came in to pitch the last two innings, not giving up a hit from the Warriors and collecting his second win of the season.

"Our guys that came out of the bullpen had over six innings of work and only gave up one run," said CUI head coach Joe Turgeon. "To give our offense a chance on a challenging day, I'm really proud of them. I'm proud of our team, our staff and I'm really hoping the fans enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to the next time we get to be together. This is a really great group and fun group to be a part of."

The Warriors had a 5-3 lead over the Eagles until both teams entered the bottom of the ninth. Garcia and Shane Hersh started the frame with a leadoff single and a double. Pinch hitter Philip Quartararo came in clutch yet again, hitting a sacrifice fly to make it 5-4. That was followed by a RBI single from Haloa Dudoit that tied the game at five apiece with one out.

The momentum continued for CUI as Dudoit was moved around to second base with a sacrifice bunt by Matt Lautz. Jair Donovan entered then entered the batter's box and on the first pitch he saw he hit a walk-off double to centerfield to score Dudoit and end the game with an Eagles 6-5 victory.

"I will remember that our team didn't give up until the end," said Donovan. "We all still had hope at the end but it was a very confidence building to see other people get on base early on in the game."

"All day long we were having fairly good, quality at-bats and we were hitting the ball right at guys," added Turgeon. "That ninth inning we just had momentum after momentum. Anytime you get the leadoff hitter on, you get that momentum and Tony Garcia III and then Shane Hersh both got on. Matt Lautz came up with Haloa on first with one out and he's one of our best players and we asked him to basically sac bunt with one out to get a runner into scoring position to get Jair Donovan up to the plate with two outs."
