Week in Review: No. 23 Eagles Take Two

IRVINE, Calif. - In this week's tennis matches for the CUI men's team, the Eagles picked up two solid victories over Point Loma Nazarene and Sonoma State.

In the first matchup for the week, February 18th, 2020, the Green and Gold started the day slowly and finished strong.

The doubles matches left the Concordia with no wins and a need to regroup before the singles matchups began.

In classic Eagles fashion, the tennis squad flew above adversity winning five of six singles matches to defeat the Sea Lions 5-2.

"We had some trouble finding our energy in doubles," said head coach Jonathan Sanchez. "We are a team that really feeds off of good energy and intensity, it brings out our best tennis. After losing all three doubles matches, it lit a fire in the team and they came out in singles playing incredible only losing one singles match. The standout of the match was Patrick Wong, who played outstanding and won a quick straight set singles point for the Eagles to tie up the match."

In the second matchup for the CUI men's tennis team the Green and Gold faced the Sonoma State Seawolves.

Unlike the first match of the week, the Eagles came out firing in doubles, taking all three matches.

The momentum of the doubles transferred over to singles where CUI took four of five matches to seal the victory 5-1 over the Seawolves.

"I was very happy with the overall performance of our team," said Sanchez. "We had great energy and intensity from beginning to end and it really paid off for us. Sonoma State is always so tough to play because of how well their team competes but we were able to persevere. Jan Simon clinched the match for us. He went down the first set but rallied back to win a tough second set and then ran with the third to get the 4th and deciding point for the team."

Head coach Sanchez now has 99 career wins for the Eagles and can potentially strike 100 in the next week of play.

The Concordia Irvine squad will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 29 at 12:00 p.m. at the Tennis Club At Newport Beach against the Cougars of Azusa Pacific.
