STANFORD, Calif. – In a battle in the Bay, the Concordia men's volleyball team competed in its fifth MPSF match-up of the season, taking on No. 12 Stanford. The Eagles fought hard but could not overcome the Cardinal block, falling overall in three sets.
Raymond Barsemian posted his 13th double-digit kill match, putting down a team-high 13 to go along with an ace. Freshman setter
Christian Oviedo earned the first start of his career, posting a double-double of 22 assists and 11 digs. Meanwhile, libero
Addison Enriques was right behind defensively with eight digs and had five assists.
The Eagles had a productive offensive showing in the first, hitting .387 off of 14 kills and just two errors. Stanford maintained a lead throughout the set, but Concordia climbed back to make things interesting.
Parker Maki, who posted his second start of the season, started off a late run for CUI while
Jonathan Carlson colleceted a block and a kill to cut the lead to two at 21-19. Barsemian fought off a set point but a kill from the Cardinal sealed the deal.
Concordia was able to push forward in the next set, going on a 6-2 run fueld by Stanford errors to get ahead 14-11. The Cardinal were able to pull away but the Eagles crept right behind, fighting off two set points by way of a Stanford service error and a solo block from
Darcy Taig.
The Green and Gold put up a mini run to come within one at 11-10 in the third.
Jordan Hoppe and
McLain Mott posted back-to-back kills to push the Eagles closer into the set, trailing 20-15. More errors from Stanford kept Concordia alive but costly errors ended the match.
Concordia falls to 6-10 overall and 1-4 in conference and will move forward to its match on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 7 pm against UC Irvine.
