HONOLULU, HI – After a first set victory over No. 4 UC Irvine, the No. 14 Concordia men's volleyball team was unable to overcome the Anteaters block, dropping the match 3-1 (24-26, 25-18, 25-21, 25-20).
Despite being outblocked 16.0-4.5, the Green and Gold were able to outdig UC Irvine 52-45. A strong reason for that was junior
Addison Enriques who had a career-high 20 digs. His digs total for the evening is the most for a four-set match in program history and the most for a four-set match from any team in the nation this season.
Another bright spot on the court was
Gil Herold, who had a personal-best nine kills to go along with three blocks.
Raymond Barsemian led the team with 10 kills while
Zachary Meyer and
Jordan Hoppe had nine and eight kills respectively.
The Eagles got off to a hot start in the first, leading 7-4 and forcing an early Anteater timeout. Meyer put down back-to-back kills to put CUI up by five at 20-15. Another put down from Meyer gave his team set point at 24-21 before UC Irvine tied it up at 24-all. Herold posted one of his four kills in the set for another set point and Barsemian clinched the set for a kill.
Tied at up at 7-all, the Anteaters pulled away until the Eagles stormed right back to take the lead at 13-12, due to an ace and a kill from Hoppe. UC Irvine was able to turn things around and ran away with the set after strong offensive swings.
Parker Maki checked in midway through the third set and put down a kill to put Concordia within three, down 14-11. Maki collected two more kills and Barsemian followed up with one of his own to bring CUI back in it at 21-20.
Down in the fourth, Hoppe had consecutive kills out of the timeout to give momentum to his team.
Jonathan Carlson also scored one of his three kills and was efficient with six digs for the night. Perched on match point at 24-18, the Eagles rallied two points off of Anteater errors to hold them off until a UCI kill ended it.
Concordia returns to the court on Friday night, taking on top-ranked Hawaii for night two of the Outrigger Invitational.
