Late Surge Helps Eagles Top Hawks

Late Buckets by McCoy Seal The Deal

OAKLAND, Calif. – In a game that was dangerously close in the final minutes, the Concordia University Irvine Eagles were able to get a late boost to the finish line on Saturday and come away with a 94-91 road win over Holy Names.

Three key dunks down the stretch by Rob McCoy helped turned the tide for the Green and Gold. The first flush came on a one-handed putback off a missed layup that caught the Hawks off guard. Kayle Knuckles also converted a key three-point play and Jamel White scored a couple free throws and a go-ahead layup late to help ice it for Concordia.

White and Knuckles led the Eagles with 20 points apiece. Former Holy Names guard Andre Green dropped 18 points for Concordia in his return to the Bay Area. Green also got to play against his younger brother Aidan for the second time this season. McCoy added 18 to give the Green and Gold four players with impressive offensive outings but his three baskets late were crucial and dealt a blow to the Hawks.

"We've had some difficult regular season games, none more than that, but our players found a way to come out on top," said CUI head coach Ken Ammann. "Holy Names made so many big plays but somehow we made a couple more. Incredible team victory, there were too many individual plays that were made to highlight just one person, although Rob McCoy's three dunks in a row were one of the most impressive things I've seen as a coach.

The Eagles came out on fire and built a quick 10-0 lead right away. Cameron English converted a pair of layups and Knuckles and McCoy each drilled a trey. CUI led by as many as 16 in the first half after Mike Mellinger drained a jumper to make it 34-18.

But the Hawks were able to erase that deficit and even take the lead on multiple occasions as it was anybody's game down the stretch.

CUI returns to the court on Wednesday, Feb. 12 when the Eagles host Hawaii Pacific. The men's game starts at 7:30 p.m. following the women's game between the Eagles and Sharks at 5:30 p.m.
