IRVINE, Calif. - With the rain subsiding, the Concordia baseball team was able to finish its four game series against Regis University on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles won the first three games against the Rangers (including a
doubleheader sweep on Saturday) but the visitors were able to avoid a series sweep by a close score of 7-5 on getaway day.
Starting pitcher
Alex Zalasky went 2.1 innings for the Eagles while
Ryan Johnston came in to relieve Zalasky and allowed two runs but put away seven batters throughout the three innings he pitched.
Chase Lyford came in for one inning while
Henry Conroy pitched the last two scoreless frames for Concordia.Â
The Rangers started things off right away getting four hits and three runs to start things off in the top of the first. The Eagles answered right back with
Haloa Dudoit reaching on an error by the third baseman and scoring on a wild pitch.
Matt Lautz and
Cooper Moore went around the bases as well to tie the score at three a piece.Â
Regis continued to score a run in a few different innings until Junior
Philip Quartararo came in to pinch hit for the Eagles and doubled to right center, bringing home
Bailey Collins and coming in within two from the Rangers, 4-6.Â
The Green and Gold came close in the bottom of the eighth with Collins knocking an RBI single up the middle and having the bases loaded with two outs. Regis was able to stop Concordia defensively and got the third out of the inning, leaving three on bases and were able to close out the rest of the game, finishing the day 5-7.Â
"Today was a grind," said CUI head coach
Joe Turgeon. "The team fought but we weren't able to overcome our shortcomings. Looking at the series as a whole I am very proud that we won the series and played as a team for the entire weekend."
CUI will look to bounce back and play a non-conference game against Azusa Pacific at
newly renovated Eagles Field on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m.
