Morris Leads No. 13 Eagles Past Argonauts

IRVINE, Calif. – Ranked No. 13 in NCAA DII this week in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) rankings, the Eagles completed a four-game sweep of Notre Dame de Namur on Wednesday afternoon.

Erika Morris had a sensational day at the plate and on the mound to lead the Green and Gold. The sophomore standout tossed a complete game in game one and limited the Argonauts to only one run before cranking not one but two homers in game two.

Game 1: Eagles 9, Argonauts 1

Morris struck out six batters and went six innings on the mound while allowing only three hits and one run to score. She improved to 4-0 on the year and now owns a measly 1.99 ERA.

CUI lead-off hitter Megan Massa contributed two singles while third baseman Amanda Gjersten knocked in a team-high 3 RBI. Mcakenzie Graham added 2 RBI and Lauren Fairchild came in off the bench to add a pair of hits as well.

Senior Haylee Kloosterman launched a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to help the cause. She went yard on the first pitch she saw and was mobbed by her teammates when she touched home plate.

"Coach always says when you get an opportunity make the most of it and when I got my at-bat it was so fun running around third and seeing all my teammates cheering me on," said Kloosterman.

"To get that win was really big for our team," said Morris. "We work really hard with Coach Rose (Imbriano) in the bullpen and we're locked in with every single pitch."

Monica Martinez also came in clutch with a RBI single to round out the scoring. Her base knock clinched the victory for the Eagles as Lauren Fairchild touched home plate to give CUI the eight-run margin needed to call the game in the bottom of the sixth.

Game 2: Eagles 7, Argonauts 0

Freshman pitcher Rae Flores took the hill in the second game and followed Morris with an impressive outing of her own. Flores held the Argonauts to just two hits and finished with a complete game shutout. She struck out four and walked only three.

Flores improved to 4-2 on the year and leads the vaunted Eagles pitching staff with a 1.33 ERA. All four pitchers sport an ERA under 2.50 as of March 12.

Morris crushed a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning and then had a case of déjà vu in the fifth. Her second two-run bomb of the evening pushed CUI's lead to 5-0.

"I came in just trying to get a base hit and just help the team out and it went over the fence not once but twice, so it was really cool," added Morris.

Sydney Sprinkle added a RBI single and Amanda Gjertsen knocked in two more runs to give her a team-best 5 RBI on the day.

The Eagles finished the day 17-5 overall and 11-4 in PacWest Conference play.
