Morris, Graham Spur Sixth Inning Comeback at Chaminade

HONOLULU, Hawaii  - A six-run sixth inning helped No. 10 Concordia University Irvine come from behind to top the Chaminade Silverswords 7-2 in a rain-shortened affair on Monday.

Both teams were hoping to get a rare tripleheader in after only managing to play one game due to rain and field conditions on Sunday. The Eagles were able to once again pick up a road victory against a PacWest opponent but they were unable to get the other two games in due to the weather.

In the first game of the series, newly named PacWest Pitcher of the Week Callie Nunes tossed a complete game shutout on Sunday to improve to 6-0 on the year. On Monday, it was CUI sophomore Erika Morris who pitched brilliantly and also provided a key hit to keep the Eagles rolling.

Trailing the Silverswords 2-1 after five innings on Monday, Mackenzie Graham blasted a RBI double to left field to send home Michelle Lieng and tie the game at 2-2. A couple pitches later, Morris sent a 1-0 pitch over the centerfield wall for the go-ahead home run that put the Eagles ahead to stay 4-2.

Lauren Lopez was a thorn in the side of Chaminade pitcher Madelyn Stockslager all day long. The CUI centerfielder collected three singles and knocked in an insurance run in the sixth to extend the Eagles lead to 5-2. Her RBI single in that frame was impressive considering it came on the eleventh pitch of the at-bat after she battled back from an 0-2 count.

Megan Massa added a RBI single to left moments after Lopez's clutch hit to round out the scoring. The game was called midway through the seventh inning due to rain and by rule, the official statistics reverted back to count just the full six innings since the two teams could not complete the final frame.

The Eagles first run came in the third inning when Sydney Sprinkle plated Lopez on a sacrifice fly.

On the mound, Morris only gave up four hits and three walks. She allowed two unearned runs in the fourth but stayed on task and never let the Silverswords get comfortable at the plate. She improved to 3-0 on the year and lowered her ERA to 2.51 on the season.

As of Monday evening, the two games that were not played as originally scheduled against Chaminade are considered postponed although no make up dates have been agreed upon.
