Three Eagles Homer to Lift CUI Over the Warriors

IRVINE, Calif. - The Eagles finished up the series over Westcliff Tuesday afternoon with a dominating offensive performance racking up 17 hits in just one game. The Eagles were able to close out the game by a final score of 16-1.

Cade Temple was the starting pitcher for the Green and Gold, pitching two innings and only allowing two hits. Noah McBride came in to relieve and pitched five innings with three strikeouts while collecting his first win of the season. Logan Mahaffy and Henry Conroy both pitched one inning at the end of the game, only allowing one run between all pitchers.

Right out of the gate, Jair Donovan rocked a three-run homer in the bottom of the first tohelp CUI take a 3-0 lead over the Warriors. Donovan's homer moved him into a tie for eighth place with 15 career home runs alongside former Eagle Charlie Douglass from the Class of 2006.

Philip Quartararo smacked his first home run as an Eagle in the bottom of the third as CUI took a 5-0 lead. With hits happening left and right for CUI, Chris Martin II hit an RBI single to bring home Tony Garcia III while Martin II scored from an error by the Warriors pitcher.

"My teammates and I have been working on our swings a lot and credit to them, they helped me get right," said Quartararo. (Their pitcher) kept throwing me sliders and I hung on that first pitch and just tendencies showed that he was going to do that. I got kind of lucky on the home run but it was sweet and I felt like I saw the ball pretty well today."

Alex DiMascio came in for Donovan in the second inning and was another Eagle who smacked a two-run homer which game CUI a commanding 11-0 lead. DiMascio went 2-for-4 and collected his first home run of the season. Donovan was injured on a foul ball but stayed in the dugout for the rest of the game.

"My first thought is hoping that Jair is okay," said DiMascio. "Obviously you don't want to see that happen to anyone and then you know the probability is that someone else is going to have to get ready to come in. So you get ready and hope to do the best you can for the team and my number got called and that's what I did."

"All those guys took big swings on good pitches and probably what's most impressive is that everybody was pretty much sticking to the middle part of the field,"  said CUI assistant coach Matt Fahey. "That's a deep part of our yard and they were just attacking good pitches. When you do that good things happen."

In the bottom of the eighth, many Eagles players came in to pitch hit and came up successful. Shoma Yoshida, Ryan Johnston and Garrett Macias came in and each made it on base by either a hit or a walk and all came home during the inning.

Concordia improved to 12-1 at home this season in newly renovated Eagles Field.

"There's a buzz in the air and a bounce in everybody's step when we get to the yard," added Fahey. "To play in a place like this every day, the proof is in the pudding, we're playing good team baseball."

Concordia (15-5, 4-0 PacWest) looks to host conference foe Fresno Pacific in a four-game series this weekend Friday, Mar. 6 and Saturday, Mar. 7. Both days will include a set of doubleheader games with an 11 a.m. start and the following game to start around 2 p.m. To follow live stats and watch the video stream for the games, click here.
