CUI Battles in Close Game for PacWest Opener

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Eagles battled all game but fell just short of the win in their PacWest Conference opener against Point Loma.

The No. 25 CUI women's basketball team competed the entire 40 minutes as the stats prove how close of a game it was.  Going into halftime, both teams had 26 rebounds, 5 assists, and 33% field goal percentages.  With the Eagles down five points going into the third quarter, they knew they had to come out strong.  The Eagles continued to fight against the Sea Lions and were within one point with one minute left to play, but the Sea Lions hit a couple buckets down the stretch and hung on for the 80-75 victory.

Overall, CUI had a solid statistic line as a team compared to PLNU.  CUI ended the game with a 40.7% field goal percentage, while shooting 28.6% from behind the arc, and 80.8% from behind the free throw line.  Compared to PLNU's 40.2% field goal percentage, 17.4% from behind the arc, and 42.9% from behind the line, it was a good defensive effort from the Eagles. The main thing that hindered CUI was turnovers.

Kennedy Fulcher, who scored the last six points for the Eagles, ended with a double-double of 18 points and 15 rebounds.  PacWest Player of the Week Michaela VanderKlugt tallied 25 points with an amazing 71% field goal percentage by going 10-for-14.  Katie Timmerman added another 14 points as she shot 60% from behind the line.

With such a close matchup, the Eagles are excited for another go at the battle of the Green and Gold as they face PLNU again at 2 p.m on Saturday, Jan. 23 in CU Arena.
