Henry Scores 20 In Home Loss to APU

IRVINE, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine men's basketball team hosted Azusa Pacific on Friday night, and unfortunately the Eagles wound up being a little too gracious as the hosts at CU Arena.

The Eagles received 20 points from Dayshone Henry and at times threatened to go on major runs by attacking the paint.

However, the Cougars were able to respond consistently with big shots while the Eagles struggled to get in an offensive rhythm. APU jumped out to a double-digit lead in the first half and put the pressure on CUI in the first 10 minutes of the contest.

The Eagles were disappointed with their execution in particular on the defensive end. APU shot 48 percent from downtown (12-for-25) which really curbed the home team's chances of clawing out of the early deficit. Conversely, CUI was able to only make one trey in the game, which was courtesy Kayle Knuckles.

"I can't recall a worse four-game stretch in 20 years in terms of showing so little fight," said CUI head coach Ken Ammann. "We completely lacked discipline on both ends so that's on me, but out players have to decide how they want to compete. That is a choice and is under our control. If we don't get together we will continue to get embarrassed out there."

Henry is leading the team in scoring and rebounding this season, averaging 21.0 points and 5.0 boards in the team's first four games. Dominic Hovasse, who has shown he can also carry the load offensively, was held to five points as the Cougars focused on locking down on the crafty scorer.

Senior Darius Lee added nine points and freshman Mac Stodart showed some nifty moves in the paint with eight points.

CUI looks to bounce back on Saturday in the rematch. Azusa Pacific will host the Green and Gold at 4:30 p.m. following the conclusion of the women's game. The CUI women's team resoundingly defeated No. 19 APU on Friday to earn the first victory over the Cougars since 2005 and also notch its second win of the season over a nationally-ranked NCAA DII opponent. Just like the APU men's team, the CUI women's team is receiving votes in the current D2SIDA national poll.
