HONOLULU, Hawai'i – After a three set win over Hawai'i Pacific last night, the Eagles were looking to continue their momentum against the Chaminade Silverswords. Both teams are currently in the hunt for the top in the PacWest conference. CUH prevailed over the CUI energy after being down by two sets and taking them to five sets and finished with scores of 23-25, 18-25, 25-21, 25-21, and 15-17.
Julia Wilson came in as a defensive specialist and made an immediate impact for the Eagles. Wilson went on an 11 point run to take the third set from the Silverswords to force a fourth set.
Danielle McCasland also contributed in a big way and had three consecutive kills to extend their lead and capture that win the Eagles needed.
Both outside hitters
Kirra Schulz and
Patience O'Neal finished the night with 14 kills with Schulz digging up 11. McCasland added 7 kills offensively while
Daniela Poles coming in defensively who had 12 digs from the back row and tied her season high of four aces on the night.
Senior
Jalyssa Sanchez was unstoppable with 12 kills and hitting a whopping .500 with no errors.
The PacWest defender of the week Hannah Tostado extends her award recognition with six blocks and six kills.
Brianna Latigue finished with 49 assists making that a second season high for her behind 54 assists from September. Libero
Cassidy Gelacio had 16 digs and one ace with Wilson playing defensively and adding 16 digs as well. This marks the second time the San Clemente, Calif. native has come in to the match racking up 16 digs this season and dished out a career high of five assists.
In the first two sets, CUH took an early lead over CUI but the Green and Gold continued to battle back and got within a few points from each set, but the Silverswords closed out both taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the fourth set, the Eagles continued their momentum from the third and took an early 12-4 lead. Just as CUH crept trickled closer in the game, a missed serve snapped their four point stretch keeping a steady lead for the Eagles with a score 16-12. Eagles took control the rest of the set to take the match to a final fifth set.
The fifth set was no easy task as the score toggled back and forth between the two teams. An attack error from the Silverswords force them to take their first timeout of the set with a three point lead for the Eagles. CUH used the timeout to their advantage as they went on a three point run to tie the score at 11 apiece. The Silverswords closed out the match by a close score of 15-17.
The Eagles will finish the Hawai'i trip against the leader in PacWest Hawai'i Hilo on Saturday, Oct. 9 at 10 p.m. PST. UHH is 9-2 overall and 6-1 in conference with their only loss to Hawai'i Pacific. The CUI women's volleyball team will be back in the CU Arena on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 5 p.m. versus Biola.
