IRVINE, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine and Biola men's basketball teams were part of history on Saturday night.
Despite 16 points from CUI freshman standout
Mac Stodart and 13 points from sharp-shooter
Drew Ramirez, Biola earned a 73-51 victory at CU Arena. Â
The win for the visiting Eagles marked career win No. 1,000 for Biola head coach Dave Holmquist.
"I didn't want to be the team for (Coach Dave) to get wins No. 999 and No. 1,000 against but if it is going to happen, I'm honored to have it happen to a great champion for the game," said CUI head coach
Ken Ammann. "Couldn't be happier for him to reach such an extremely rare milestone in our profession."
"We've had some great battles over the last 20 years," continued Ammann, who was actually recruited by Holmquist back in his playing days before attending Stanford University. "He's a great role model for me, has competed at the highest level, and has won and lost with class over the last four decades."
Holmquist becomes just the fifth men's college head basketball coach out of any division to reach that mark. Coach Mike Krzyzewski of Duke University and Herb Magee of Philadelphia/Jefferson University are the other active coaches that have also won 1,000 career games in men's college basketball.
Concordia joins the PacWest Conference and college basketball community in saluting Coach Holmquist's historic achievement.
