IRVINE, Calif. - The Eagles men's soccer team tested their skills out in a friendly scrimmage against the Lions for Vanguard University.
Although the match does not count in the record books, the Eagles came out impressively winning the bout 6-1. This served as the first action the Eagles Field has seen in over a year.
In the unconventional three 30-minute periods, the Green and Gold managed to break in the new and improved scoreboard quite nicely. CUI poured on six goals, with five different Eagles ripping the net.
The five gentlemen of CUI who found the net were
Luke Ryan,
Elijah Amadin,
Klaus Huovila,
Michael Antonovich, and
Brendan Laun.
Although Laun blazed the back of the net twice and had an assist, Huovila scored in the most unique fashion. In the 67th minute of the match the ball rolled out of bounds for a standard Eagles throw in. But to everyone's surprise, the throw in was just grazed by the fingertips of the Lions keeper and right into the goal, for the fourth goal for CUI of the night.
"It was great for our guys to be able to get out there and play again," said head coach
Chris Gould. "We have had so many people sacrifice and serve to make this happen. It is a good time to enjoy the hard work that was put in behind the scenes. It is really a good day to be an Eagle."
With the ball rolling and confidence high, the Eagles will begin their regular season in La Mirada, Calif. against PacWest rivals BIOLA Eagles on February 10, 2021 at 7:00 p.m.
In this unorthodox season, the Green and Gold are scheduled to play two of their five games against BIOLA. So, fasten your seatbelts and get ready to fly with CUI for the 2021 season!
