Eagles Notch First Two Wins of the Season

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Concordia University Irvine beach volleyball team traveled up to Cal State Northridge Friday to take on the CSUN Matadors and The Master's University Mustangs. The Eagles were looking to bounce back after dropping their first two matches at home and find themselves back in the win column.

The Eagles took on The Master's University in the first of two games Friday. The Eagles were victorious over the Mustangs, winning by a final score of 4-1. The green and gold's fourth pair, senior Nickie Hughes and freshman Sara Ostojic took care of business in their game. They held the Mustangs to only six points in both of their sets. In eight of eleven sets, the sandy birds limited The Master's to 15 points or less. The only pair who surrendered a loss that day was a three set thriller between the first pair match-up. Ellie Cary and Vanessa Bernzen won the first set, and The Master's were able to rally back, win the second set and force a third. The Eagles fell just short to the Mustangs in that pairing.

CUI were set to take on CSUN in their second match. This match was a thriller as the sandy birds collected their second victory of the day, narrowly winning the duel. The final score was 3-2 in favor of the green and gold. Two of the five matches played went to a third set, where both pairs of Eagles were able to battle back in the third set to secure the victory over the Matadors. The other green and gold pairings were undefeated and secured the second win of the day over the CSUN.

Senior Vanessa Bernzen summed up Friday saying, "Even though my pair could not come away with a victory this afternoon, I'm so proud of the rest of the team for battling hard and coming out to secure us with two victories overall."

The sandy birds will be back in action on Sunday, Mar. 21 as they travel to Malibu, Calif. to take on the Waves of Pepperdine in a one-game match. Pepperdine comes into this upcoming match ranked No.10 in the nation in NCAA Division 1 Women's Beach Volleyball. A challenging task for the Eagles but after hanging around with No. 7 Loyola Marymount last weekend, the green and gold look to beat Pepperdine at home!
