Newport Rib Company Eagles of the Week: Mia Corippo and Alexis Dirige

By Kara Vincitorio

This week our Newport Rib Company Eagle of the Week consists of a pairing from the beach volleyball team, Alexis Dirige and Mia Corippo.

Dirige got her bachelor's degree in psychology and is currently getting her master's in counseling while Corippo is getting her bachelor's in kinesiology.

The duo has been paired together for the beach team and is slated in the No. 3 slot for the Eagles. Last week, they contributed two wins and clinched both of the first two victories for CUI in the 2021 season.

Our team dynamic is very competitive and determined. Mia and I both love to win and our drive to win makes us determined to continuously improve our game as a team. Although Mia and I are different in some ways, our differences balance each other out which allows us to have a steady team dynamic.

To begin the season, CUI took on ranked teams No. 8 Cal and No. 7 LMU. The Eagles fell short in both matches but competed hard and were able to keep up with the top teams.

The mindset for our season this year has been to be as competitive as possible, and show people that our school can o more than they previously thought. Our whole team is very talented, I think sometimes that surprises people.

“It is a great opportunity to be able to compete against the top Division I teams,” added Girige. “Competing against high-level teams allows us to really push our capabilities by learning how to get better and how to compete at a high level.”

“Playing big schools is sometimes challenging, but it's fun to be the underdogs and come in and show them a game they weren't expecting,” said senior Corippo.

Last week, the Green and Gold duo played against The Master's to start the day and won in two straight sets with dominating scores of 21-6 and 21-12.  The second match of the day was against CSUN and they were able to pull out another two set victory with scores 21-17 each.

“I have been excited to see Mia's progression in her athleticism and her physicality at the net, she is the perfect compliment to Alexis ability to see the whole court and pick up balls that few people can keep from dropping," said head coach Jenny Griffith. “Together they are a tough team to beat!”

The Eagles look to take on another ranked team against No. 10 Pepperdine on Sunday, Mar. 21 at 12 p.m. in Malibu, Calif. The next home game will be Tuesday, Mar. 23 versus Colorado Mesa at 8:30 a.m.
