CUI Pushes Biola to Five Sets

IRVINE, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine women's volleyball team start their three home game stretch tonight against Biola in the battle of the Eagles in the PacWest conference. Biola was able to secure a win over Concordia going to five sets with scores 25-20, 25-27, 20-25, 25-18, and 11-15.

Kirra Schulz led the Eagles with 14 kills and 17 digs with Gracie Rowland following right behind with 12 kills. Middle Mackenzie Jensen added nine kills to the Eagles total while the other middles Hannah Tostado and Jalyssa Sanchez totaled four kills and five blocks. Danielle McCasland played in three sets and tallied five kills and five digs. Freshman setter Kendall Sekula got her first start of the season racking up 34 assists. Both liberos Cassidy Gelacio and Courtney Arume contributed 11 digs a piece.

In the battle of the Eagles, CUI was able to win the first in fourth set after taking early leads. BU tried to rally back in both sets but the Green and Gold were able to stop them from catching up.

In set two, Sekula went on a five point service run at the back line to have a 21-18 lead over the Red and Black. BU retaliated with a four point run to take a one point lead 24-23. Biola finished the set with a close score 25-27 over the Green and Gold. The third set was no different for BU as they continued to go on service runs that would extend their lead over CUI and never let them get back in the set, forcing a fifth and deciding set.

In the fifth set, the score toggled back and forth from each team but a few hitting errors from Concordia allowed Biola to gain an 11-7 lead and was able to close out the set with a final score 11-15.

The Eagles (0-2 PacWest) continue their home stretch against Point Loma (0-2 PacWest) on Wednesday Mar. 31 at 7 p.m. in the CU Arena.
