Collins & Benefeito Lead Offense at Biola

LA MIRADA, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine baseball team dropped both games of today's doubleheader with Biola, falling to 3-7 on the season. Despite collecting more total baserunners than Biola in both games, CUI struggled to come away with a win in La Mirada.

The Eagles collected just 3 hits in Game 1, however 9 walks and 1 HBP allowed them to reach base an impressive 13 times. In the 8th inning, senior Bailey Collins hit a 2-run home run that scored Conner Bock, who reached base on a walk. This home run accounted for the only Green & Gold runs in the game. Brett Vansant, Mason Metcalfe, and Grant Stuart we able to strike out 9 Biola batters in total, but were unable to keep the ball in the yard as Robertanthony Cruz hit 3 home runs for the Red & Black. Game 1 would conclude with a 9-2 final score.

In Game 2, Cooper Moore helped the Eagles get out to an early lead, scoring Nathan Benefeito on an RBI double down the left field line. Biola would respond with a run of their own in the bottom of the 1st. In the top of the 2nd, a Benefeito single scored fellow freshman Xavier Gonzalez to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead. They would add on to their lead in the 3rd inning, when Kevin Fowler scored Jair Donovan on an RBI single of his own. CUI would hold on to their 3-2 lead until the bottom of the 7th, when Biola tied the game. Two batters later, the Red & Black walked off on a single to left field, handing CUI their 7th loss of the season.

The Eagles look to split the series with Biola tomorrow in a doubleheader at 1:00 & 4:30 PM.  The games are not yet open to the public.
