STANFORD, Calif – The Concordia University Irvine men's volleyball team started their four game road streak against Stanford tonight. Stanford won in their home gym in four sets with scores 23-25, 25-19, 24-26, and 14-25.
Addison Enriques led the Green and Gold with 10 digs. Seniors
Raymond Barsemian and
Jordan Hoppe finished the night with 22 and 16 kills. Barsemian led the Eagles at the back line with three aces.
Jesper Schut had seven kills while setter
McLain Mott had 41 assists in the four set match.
CUI took an early timeout with a score 4-8 in the first set. A four point scoring run from Barsemian at the end line got the Green and Gold to come within two points and force a second timeout from Stanford at 14-16. Carlson goes to the back line to serve and starts with an ace that dribbles over the net and a kill from Barsemian to bring the score within two again 21-23. Back-to-back kills from Hoppe got the Eagles within one but Stanford was able to secure the first set with a close score 23-25.
The beginning of the second set toggled back and forth until the Eagles took a three point lead. A lift from the Stanford setter extends the lead 17-13 for Concordia and were able to finish the set with a 25-19 win.
A couple errors from the CUI forced a timeout at 8-11 in the third. A couple kills from Hoppe and Schut and a hitting error from the Cardinal allowed the Eagles to tie the game at 19 all and forced a Stanford timeout. After a timeout from the Eagles at 22-23, they were able to stop the Cardinal momentum and a kill from Carlson would tie the game yet again. A block and kill from Stanford had them finish 24-26, taking a 2-1 lead over Concordia.
A block from Schut and Barsemian stopped the Cardinal six point run. Barsemian ran with it while serving and went on a run and forced a timeout from Stanford. Two kills from
Keegan Carey brought the Eagles within single digits. Another kill from Carey stopped Stanford from finishing the match along with a block from
Christian Oviedo and
Owen Chun to keep the Eagles alive. Unfortunately, the Eagles weren't able to take the fourth set and Stanford finished the match 1-3.
CUI (3-10 MPSF) look to bounce back against Stanford (2-13 MPSF) again in the Maples Pavilion on Saturday, Apr. 3 at 4 p.m.
