IRVINE, Calif.- The No. 11 Concordia University Irvine softball team took on Biola at home for the last time in conference play. CUI and BU have played twelve times this season and every matchup has been an exciting battle.
Game One: CUI 2, BU 4
CUI answered back to BU's one run lead in the bottom of the third, putting up two runs on the board.
Sydni Dix hit a two-run RBI single that scored
Megan Massa and
Sydney Sprinkle.
Concordia held the lead until the fifth where Biola had a big inning that resulted in the Red and Black collecting three additional runs.
CUI fought back, but were unable to close the gap.
Rae Flores started the game strong and only let up one unearned run the first two times through the lineup.
Callie Nunes was brought in the fifth to close the game out for the Green and Gold. She pitched two point one shut-out innings, holding Biola to one hit.
Game Two: CUI 6, BU 1
Kelsea Sweeney had another standout performance, going the distance and doing a great job of keeping Biola's bats off balance. In seven innings she only let up five hits, throwing 13 groundouts and four crucial strikeouts. In the sixth and seventh inning, Sweeney ended each inning with a strikeout when runners were in scoring position. Both occasions were big moments for CUI, preventing Biola from picking up any momentum.
CUI head coach and athletic director
Crystal Rosenthal has been really impressed with Sweeney's performances.
"She's been big-time," said Rosenthal. "The most important part to me for Kelsea is to be able to hit her spots and her locations, and pound the strike zone. It's been really big for us to gain some momentum. I can't say enough about her last two performances."
CUI came fired up in the first inning, stacking four runs on the scoreboard. Sprinkle singled to center to score the first two runs of the game. Then
Missy Nemeth came up and smacked a two-run home run to left center, providing her team with some insurance runs.
"We had a really good first inning and I think after a tough first game, to answer back with four runs was important to help Kelsea feel good on the mound and confident in her pitches," said Sprinkle.
CUI held a 4-0 lead over BU until the fifth where Nemeth homered again to score two additional runs.
"I struggled a little bit in the first game, but I changed my swing and I felt like I was seeing the ball really well after that," said Nemeth. "It was fun to come together that second game and get the win."
CUI plays APU next on Friday Apr. 30th. The Green and Gold will take on the Cougars for their senior day at Eagles Field.
