Vansant & Brown Give Bullpen The Day Off

ALAMEDA, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine baseball team swept Thursday's doubleheader against Academy of Art in their first road trip of the season. The Eagles improve to 13-12 on the season, while remaining second in the PacWest Southern Pod standings behind Azusa Pacific.

In Game 1, senior Brett Vansant dealt on the mound, throwing his second career complete game. The Redlands native struck out seven batters while allowing four earned runs with zero walks. He ran into some trouble in the bottom of the ninth inning, where the tying and winning runs both managed to get on base with two outs. However, Vansant came through in the clutch and struck out the final batter of the game, sealing the victory for the Green & Gold and improving his record to 3-4 on the season.

"I was able to locate my fastball at the bottom of the zone for most of my start. Also getting secondary pitches over for a strike helped get some soft contact from the Academy hitters. I was able to get good feel with my slider during the game which really helped." – Brett Vansant

Bailey Collins drove in two of the Eagles' five runs in Game 1, first with an RBI single in the first inning and then with a solo home run in the eighth inning. Collins now has 30 career home runs, trailing Derek Patterson (35) and Matt Ross (32) for the all-time CUI record.

Haloa Dudoit also contributed to the scoring with an RBI groundout in the second inning, scoring Tony Garcia III. Then in the ninth inning, Jair Donovan drew a throw from the catcher to second base on a steal, allowing Xavier Gonzalez to score on the play. The Eagles' offense finished Game 1 with nine hits, two doubles, one home run, two sac bunts, and five runs scored.

In Game 2, Dillon Brown decided to give the bullpen the day off, throwing a 94-pitch complete game and improving to 2-0 on the season. The Newport Rib Company Eagle of the Week struck out six Urban Knight batters, while only surrendering two earned runs on 11 hits.

The Eagles were able to score four runs on five hits, led by Donovan who turned in a three-hit performance. A crucial three run fifth inning allowed CUI to take a 4-3 lead, where it would remain until the game was over. In addition, the heart of the order each collected 1 RBI off the bats of Matt Lautz, Donovan, Collins, and Calvin Schonebaum.

A CUI milestone was set in Game 2, as Bailey Collins collected two walks, giving him 103 in his career. With today's performance, he is now the all-time CUI walks leader!

The Eagles look for a series sweep in Friday's doubleheader at 2:00 & 5:30 PM.
