Eagles Head Into Regional Championship With No Mercy

IRVINE, Calif.- The No. 11 Concordia University Irvine softball team had an incredible offensive day in their second day of the NCAA West Regional. The Eagles faced Central Washington in their second elimination game and went on to rematch UH Hilo for their third elimination game of the tournament.

CUI's bats have been hot since their initial 4-3 loss to the Vulcans in their first game of the West Regional. They have run-ruled their opponents in two of the three elimination games, outscoring their opponents 30-5.

Game One: CUI 9, CWU 2

Freshman Rylie Rohr began the ConcBall party with a homer over left field, scoring Marisa Stockton. Stockton has been seeing the ball great these last two days. She was 3-3 against Northwest Nazarene and then 3-4 against Central Washington.

"Marisa Stockton went off today," stated head coach and athletic director Crystal Rosenthal. "She's been on the ball all day and I think the bottom half of our line up did a good job getting on base. Having better quality at bats, we could move some runners."

"It was really nice to come out and put two runs on the board for our team and come out stronger than we did yesterday against Hilo," stated Rohr. "It was a really good feeling to get us started."

"Going into the box I was really comfortable today and then I was seeing the ball really big," continued Rohr. "And it all starts when I'm in the dugout with Rose and our thing is F.U.N. for fun so it all starts there and I was seeing the ball really well."

The Eagles continued to chip away at the Central Washington defense continuously scoring runs. CUI had another big inning in the seventh. Rohr got the inning rolling again with a home run over center, scoring three RBI. That was Rohr's eighth homer of the season; she is tied for the most home runs on the team with Sydney Sprinkle and Missy Nemeth.

CUI has a deep pitching lineup and the pitching staff complements each other well. Kelsea Sweeney started in the circle for the Green and Gold. She has been dominant on the rubber all season, doing her job and giving her team the opportunity to stay in games. Sweeney was replaced by freshman Cortney Koelmans to close the game in the bottom of the third. Koelmans put in five innings of great work, facing 14 batters. Out of those 14 she stuck out seven. She showcased her spin, giving Central Washington nothing good to put their bat on.

"Kelsea came in and gave us what she had and followed up with a freshman to finish off game one," said Rosenthal. "I thought Central Washington was a really good team, thought their pitcher came out and threw well."

Game Two: CUI 12, UHH 3

The Eagles came fired up in their second game of the day, catching an early lead. Sprinkle started the first inning with a no-doubter over the left field line cashing in two runs. That was Sprinkle's third home run against UH Hilo this season. She previously hit two off of them at the AQ Pod Series.

The Eagles offense was unmatched. Sprinkle, Megan Massa, and Lauren Lopez hit 500 and above off of the Vulcans. The Green and Gold went off in the sixth putting up six additional runs against the Vulcans. Sprinkle began the inning with a double which scored three RBI. Stockton had an RBI single down left field line chipping in another run and then Jocelyn Pino had a big time three-run homer putting the Eagles up 12-0.

"Just looking at our box score, 22 hits on the day, took care of the ball a lot better than we did yesterday," said Rosenthal. "Kinda spread out offense and power when we needed it and I think it was a really good day and to be honest it started last night. A little bit with some patience and letting the ball get to us. Really really proud of our effort today and excited to see what tomorrow brings."

Erika Morris threw a phenomenal game on the rubber. She had excellent control, relentlessly hitting her spots and keeping the Red and Black's bats off balance.

The Eagles play again Saturday for the championship games at 12 p.m. If the Eagles win the 12 p.m. game they will play Biola again for the title.

"We are very pumped up," said Morris. "I think that tomorrow is going to be something very exciting."
