LA MIRADA, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine baseball team won Monday's continuation game against Biola, a game that originally started on April 24
th and was suspended in extra innings due to darkness.
April 24th
Senior
Bailey Collins got CUI out to an early lead with a solo home run in the second inning. Biola would come back with a run of their own the very next inning, tying the score at 1-1.
In the fourth inning, catcher
Juan Zuniga singled to left field, scoring
Philip Quartararo and giving the Eagles their second lead of the game. However, Biola would respond again with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, once again tying the game at 2-2.
Cole Spear started the game for the Green & Gold on the mound, throwing seven innings while also striking out seven. The graduate student only surrendered two earned runs and one walk, giving CUI a quality start.
After playing the eighth inning, the umpires decided to suspend the game due to darkness.
May 3rd
Play resumed in the top of the ninth inning on Monday, May 3
rd. After a scoreless ninth, Quartararo walked with one out in the 10
th to bring up Collins. On the second pitch of the at-bat, Collins hit his 11
th home run of the season and second go-ahead home run in just three days, giving the Eagles a 4-2 lead.
Biola proved resilient, hitting a two-run home run of their own in the bottom of the inning to tie the game once again. Neither team was able to score in the 11th, sending the game into the 12
th.
Jeff Pellegrino led of the inning with a hit by pitch, quickly advancing to second base on the next play. With one out in the inning,
Will Bonn doubled to left center, scoring Pellegrino and once again giving CUI the lead. Two batters later,
Haloa Dudoit singled up the middle for his 246
th hit of his career, scoring Bonn and giving CUI a much needed insurance run.
Dudoit is now just three hits shy of tying the all-time CUI hit record (Kyle Konicek – 249).
Noah McBride came in to close the game in the bottom of the 12
th, earning his first career save for the Green & Gold.
Carpenter Pagett earned the win, his first of the season, striking out three batters and allowing zero runs on one hit in 1.1 innings pitched.
The Eagles return to action on Thursday in a series against Academy of Art. This will be CUI's first and only 4-game home series of the season.
