IRVINE, Calif. – Tuesday will be one of the days that Concordia University Irvine softball alum
Amanda Fama remembers for the rest of her life.
The school's record-holder for most career home runs will be representing CUI at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo as a key infielder for Team Italy. It's a realization of a dream for a dual citizen who was one of the most impressive and impactful student-athletes during her time playing for the CUI softball program.
If that wasn't enough – get this – Italy plays USA Softball at 8 p.m. PT to open play for both countries on Tuesday evening.

Concordia has a number of Olympic connections.
Current CUI head coaches
Paula Weishoff (women's volleyball) and
Riley Salmon (men's volleyball) each were three-time Olympians that made it on to the podium. Salmon played for Team USA in 2004, 2008 and 2012, helping the Red, White and Blue earn a Gold Medal in 2008. Weishoff was a member of the 1984 USA squad that won silver and was named Most Valuable Player of the 1984 team that year in Los Angeles.
Three-time Olympic Gold Medalist Misty May-Treanor, who soared to national prominence with beach volleyball teammate Kerri Walsh Jennings, also earned her master's of coaching and athletic administration (MCAA) at Concordia.
Now it is
Amanda Fama's time to shine on the Olympic Stage.
While at Concordia, Fama was a First Team All-American, two-time All-GSAC selection, and the 2012 GSAC Player of the Year. The Anaheim, Calif, native remains the all-time Concordia leader in multiple categories including career on-base-percentage and single-season homers.
Fama also served as a volunteer assistant coach this past season, helping CUI athletic director & softball head coach
Crystal Rosenthal, associate head coach
Rose Imbriano, and their staff navigate the COVID-19 pandemic. The CUI softball team won 34 games this past season and made the NCAA DII West Region Championship Round for the second time.
On behalf of the entire CUI family, we hope she has a rewarding and memorable experience playing with the best softball players in the world!
