Eagles Dominate in First Game of 2022, VanderKlugt Collects 1,000th Rebound

OAKLAND, Calif. – The CUI women's basketball team started off the new year in style with a 34-point victory over PacWest opponent Holy Names. CUI improves to 7-5 on the season and 4-2 in conference play, tied for third in the PacWest standings with Biola and Academy of Art.

VanderKlugt's 1,000th Rebound
Five-year starter Michaela VanderKlugt collected her 1,000th career rebound on Saturday, becoming the first player in Concordia history and only the second player in PacWest history to reach that mark. After recording 15 rebounds against the Hawks, she finished the game with 1,004 in her career. VanderKlugt needs only 6 more rebounds to pass Roya Rustamzada's 1,009 (Point Loma, 2014-2018) to become the all-time PacWest Conference rebound record holder.

The Game
The Eagles started with a Katie Timmerman three only eight seconds into the game, and never looked back. Timmerman ranks second on the team in treys this season with 26, shooting a team-best 48 percent beyond the arc. The Green & Gold reached a double-digit lead within the first four minutes of the game, maintaining that momentum to a 24-point lead going into half. The game ultimately finished with a final score of 65-31, while CUI held a 30-point lead for nearly the entire fourth quarter.

The Eagle defense forced 18 turnovers in the game, directly converting to 16 points for the Green & Gold. The defense also recorded five steals and four blocks in the game. With a strong defensive showing and sharp shooting from the offense, CUI controlled the entire game.

Key Performances
Timmerman, VanderKlugt, and Jasmine Rachal combined for 45 points in the win. The trio shot 53 percent from the floor, 50 percent from three-point range, and a perfect three-for-three from the line. Camryn Kiernan scored a season-high nine points on three treys, one steal, and one assist. Sophomore Sierra Clark helped orchestrate the offense, collecting a team-high 7 assists for the second time this season.
