Box Score FRESNO, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine men's basketball team had the chance to snag another road win while visiting the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
Unfortunately for the Green and Gold, the Sunbirds built up an early double-digit lead and refused to allow the Eagles to dig out of that early hole. Fresno Pacific ultimately claimed a 66-44 victory over the visitors and CUI will look to return the favor when the Eagles host the Sunbirds in a rematch in early February.
"The last several weeks have been unlike any other with guys coming in and out and also several injuries," said CUI head coach
Ken Ammann. "But everyone else is going through similar challenges so there's no excuse for the extremely poor starts the last two games. We need to practice better and clean up many details that have slipped. Hopefully we can get healthy going into this final stretch of our season but regardless we need to compete much better."
The Eagles were led by Matt Weyand's nine points. He sank three triples while
Kobe Sanders and
Cristian Butler each made two treys. Sanders, Butler, and
Joshua Caston each added eight points on the night. CUI leading scorer
Wayne Arnold was held to a season-low seven points by a stingy FPU defense.
Despite that development, Arnold still ranks third among all NCAA DII men's basketball players in scoring with an average of 24.3 points per game. Arnold has scored at least 22 points in 10 of CUI's 14 games so far this season.
The Compton Dominguez High School product also came up with three blocks to run his season total to 20 stuffs. That leads the entire CUI squad.
The Eagles get a chance to get back on track with the three Hawaii schools from the PacWest Conference coming to Irvine next week.
Hawai'i Hilo is scheduled to visit Concordia on Monday, Jan. 24 at 7:30 p.m. followed by Chaminade and Hawaii Pacific on Thursday and Saturday respectively.
