IRVINE, Calif. - The stage was set for Tuesday's home opener for the Concordia University Irvine men's basketball to be a memorable experience.
But on a night that Concordia honored men's basketball head coach
Ken Ammann for recently earning career win No. 500, Cal State Dominguez Hills played the role of spoiler as the Toros turned an early deficit into a 79-72 victory.
Lance Coleman II poured in 25 points and shot 45 percent from the field on 9-for-20 shooting. He made five treys and helped CUI open up an eight-point lead near the midway point of the first half. Concordia led at the break by a score of 30-28.
Kobe Sanders and Cam Fini each chipped in with a dozen points while
Bryce Fitzgerald added 11 points as well.
The story of the game was how the Toros were able to attack CUI's defense. Coach Ammann noted the squad will need to improve defensively the next few days as they prepare for their upcoming challenges in non-conference play.
"We didn't get it done," said Ammann. "We didn't do a great job competing for rebounds and we got boxed out. Our shot selection needs to be better and we didn't play hard enough."
The Golden Eagles head to Azusa later this week to face a pair of GNAC schools at a neutral site. CUI plays Western Washington on Friday and Seattle Pacific on Saturday. Both games for CUI begin at 5 p.m. over at Azusa Pacific University with the Cougars playing the opposite GNAC school in the nightcap on both occasions.
