Box Score CUI women's basketball defeated Cal Poly Humboldt 70-61 to earn their first win of the season Thursday night. The Golden Eagles were led by graduate students
Katie Timmerman and
Jasmine Rachal all night long.
Timmerman and Rachal combined for 45 of the 70 points for CUI. Rachal went for 22 points as she carved up the Lucky Loggers defense down low. Timmerman did her damage from three-point territory as she went 7 for 10 from deep collecting 23 points on the night.
From the first tip to the last bucket, it was a hard-fought game. Up until the fourth period the largest lead by any team was eight points.
Early in the game Timmerman made her presence felt as she went a perfect 2 for 2 from deep. Fellow graduate student
Stephanie Lee joined in on the three-point party as she nailed one from behind the arc late in the first period.
Sophomore
Teagan Thurman found a way to impact the game a different way as she collected two steals and grabbed six rebounds before halftime. Cal Poly Humboldt just couldn't track down the duo of Timmerman and Rachal as they led all scorers in the game heading into intermission.
Coming onto the court in the second half, CUI held a slim 33-31 lead but got some help from their bench. Freshman
Kayla Cabaccang and Sophomore
Camryn Kiernan both hit timely three-point shots to strengthen the Golden Eagles lead. Freshman
Michaela Young who comes into to the game to break down defenses with her court awareness was able to get to the free throw line and hit two crucial buckets late.
Heading into the fourth period, head coach
Christine Collins-Kiernan challenged her team to finish the game on the defensive side of the ball. Her team answered the call as four players ended the game with two steals a piece.
