Coleman II Pours In 33 Against Bethesda

McHugh Adds Season-High 11 In Last Non-Conference Game

IRVINE, Calif. – A quick glance at the stat sheet after Tuesday's game and you will see Concordia came up with more rebounds, assists and steals than their opponents from Bethesda.  Both teams also shot a sizzling – and identical - 53 percent from the floor.

Unfortunately for the Golden Eagles, the Flames wound up with more points and scored the last six of the game to snatch a 90-86 victory.

Tuesday was a great shooting day for Concordia leading scorer Lance Coleman II, who poured in a season-high 33 points on 13-for-21 shooting. His jumper with just under a minute to play gave CUI an 86-84 lead.

Coleman II has emerged as a consistent scorer for the Golden Eagles and drained six of his 10 attempts from long range.  The CSUN graduate transfer is now shooting 50 percent from three-point land and has gone an eye-popping 20-for-40 from downtown through his first five games with Concordia.

Five Golden Eagles scored in double figures. Bryce Fitzgerald contributed another double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. He shot 6-for-10 inside the arc and was one of four Golden Eagles to come up with at least two steals.

Point guard Kobe Sanders helped the cause with 10 points and true freshman Jackson Tucker was solid again with a dozen points and four rebounds as a starter.  Kendall McHugh added a season-high 11 points in what was his best offensive outing of the year so far.

The Flames jumped out to an 11-point advantage midway through the first half. However, CUI finished the first period on a 13-4 run.  Coleman II started the surge with a trey and had eight points during that stretch.

Jonah Tolmaire also provided a spark late in the first half by smacking the ball loose and rumbling down court for a breakaway layup.  That brought the Golden Eagles within two and Bethesda led by only four at the break, 51-47.

McHugh was big in the second half and canned his first three-pointer of the season.  He added a couple jumpers around the free-throw line and handed out four assists on the day to help the cause.  His dish inside to Coleman II for a layup put CUI up 82-80 with about two minutes remaining.

The Flames however capitalized late when Amar Ross got a three to fall while getting fouled.  His four-point play evened the game at 84 before Justin Clark's trey put Bethesda in front in the final minute.

"Give Bethesda a lot of credit," said CUI head coach Ken Ammann. "They came in and played really, really hard and were scrappy and shot at a really high percentage. They are capable of doing that and beat Cal State Northridge last year. The frustrating part for us was giving up a high-percentage on (their) field goals. After Thanksgiving, we will change some things and be extremely demanding on every detail so we can be ready to compete against Dominican on Thursday."

Concordia returns to action with two home games next week. The Golden Eagles host the Dominican Penguins in the PacWest Conference opener for both squads next Thursday, Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. following the women's game at 5 p.m.

Then on Saturday, Dec. 3 it will be Concordia against Academy of Art at home at 4:30 p.m. following the ladies matchup at 2 p.m. in Irvine.
