CUI Avenges Loss to Biola

IRVINE, Calif. - For most of the first half of Saturday's matinee against Biola, the Concordia University Irvine women's basketball team was playing from behind.

However, a huge third quarter performance from the host Eagles erased a double-digit deficit and helped CUI snatch a 67-57 victory.  The Green and Gold avenged last week's loss to Biola and in doing so, CUI claimed its tenth victory in its last 12 games.

Katie Timmerman erupted in the second half with multiple clutch shots and finished with a game-high 20 points. It's the most points she's scored for the Eagles this year since the season opener when she had 22 against Cal Poly Pomona.

The Eagles played inspired defense as a unit to help themselves get back into the game. Down by 10 in the third quarter, Samantha Fries converted two baskets off the glass to help turn the tide. Fries finished with 10 points and nine rebounds in her latest solid outing.

Michaela VanderKlugt also earned another double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Biola efforted to limit VanderKlugt and Jasmine Rachal from getting good looks.

Rachal still was able to get free for a few baskets and finished with 10 points. The Brea Olinda High School alum also tied a career-high with eight assists as her and VanderKlugt were able to move the ball and find open teammates for good shots.

"A big difference for us was everyone found a way to contribute and I don't know if it was any one person necessarily that stood out," said CUI head coach Christine Collins-Kiernan. "They just looked like a good Concordia team out there and when you have a good team it makes it harder to be beat because you can't just focus on shutting down one aspect of it. They did a really good job of trying to take Jasmine and especially Michaela away by surrounding them and to their credit those two found the open person and got them a great shot.  They just stayed in the fight until they could find their moments to convert and score."

CUI hits the road for its next two games to visit Azusa Pacific and Point Loma before its final homestand of the year beginning Thursday, Feb. 24 against Holy Names.
